Similar to Monday, we began our day at 6:45am with morning prayer. For breakfast we were treated to a variety of delicious bagels and were then chauffeured to school by 7:30 am. My morning began with sitting in as the science class teacher with Claire for the morning with the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The teachers were administering an assessment to some of the students and needed help covering for their class.

The students were thrilled to see us in their classroom and loved to learn more about us. As the students were working on their assignments Claire and I entertained ourselves with four hours worth of all the card games we could think of and even a small puzzle. Up next was school lunch which was Frito chili pie, one of the student’s favorite meals. It was great to be able to sit down with the kids during lunch to get to know more about them and some of the things they liked to do. Once our bellies were full, we headed to recess with the kids. The highlight of recess was teaching the 7th grade girls a new game. They thought it was so great that they started gathering others to play with us. It was awesome to see something, such as this small game to bring the kids together and have fun.

At the end of the day we returned home, gathered to discuss our days, and learned about the Lasallian Volunteers program. We wrapped up this fantastic day with eating ice cream outside in February at the locals’ favorite ice cream place, Freckles, while building community with our group from Saint Mary’s and individuals from Tulsa.
