First day of school! What a day! We started out the day playing in the gym with the kids for morning recess. They were initially very shy, but as recess progressed our volleyball game grew and grew.

Moving into the classroom, it was a wonderful experience to get to know the students’ personalities. It was a learning curve to adjust to a different classroom experience than I am used to. However, when I had the chance to work with some students one-on-one my eyes were opened. Hearing their side of their story and what makes them unique led to a powerful experience.

On our way back to the Holy Family Mission, where we stay, it was great to debrief and hear about everyone else’s experience. Back at the mission, we had taco night and team building exercises. Many of us were exhausted from our first day and hit the hay early in anticipation for day two at school!
